Road construction and earthworks
FELS limestone products are used in the form of various aggregates in virtually all the courses making up a road or track, from the sub-base as a firm, stable base, to the bituminous base and binder courses.
Roads must be durable and resistant to both loads and the weather. Compound hydrated lime fillers in the asphalt prolong their useful life by increasing their resistance to abrasion, rutting and premature ageing.
Soil stabilization and soil improvement
The use of FELS lime in earthworks is a proven method of making unsuitable soils suitable for use as a building material. Substrates and sub-bases for roads are stabilised in the same way as substrates for buildings.
FELS lime extracts water from the soil through its reactive calcium oxide, instantly improving its backfilling and load-bearing capacity. The lime gives the soil durable stability and makes it resistant not only to the ingress of water, but also to frost. Using natural lime makes costly replacement of the soil unnecessary and prevents contamination of the soil and water by various pollutants.
