The opencast mines of the Fels-Werke produce limestone products for a wide variety of applications in road construction, structural and civil engineering, concrete construction, gardening and landscaping and waterway construction.

Limestone is a sedimentary rock consisting mainly of calcium carbonate. Most limestone deposits in Germany arose millions of years ago from the skeletons and shells of living organisms in the sea. In contrast to younger rocks, the devonian Fels limestone is characterized by its high compactness (dry raw density approx. 2.7 t/m3) and thus frost resistance. Hardly any other rock can be used as universally and has proven itself for so many centuries as limestone. Used in road construction, it improves the substructure of roads and thus creates a solid and durable foundation for the superstructure.
